Specific Phobias Therapy in Adelaide

Specific Phobias Therapy in Adelaide

Overcome fear with confidence and care — one step at a time.

It’s normal to have fears. But when a fear becomes intense, persistent, and starts interfering with your daily life, it may be a specific phobia. Specific phobias are characterised by a strong and irrational fear of a particular object, situation, or activity, often leading to avoidance, anxiety, or distress that can limit your freedom and wellbeing.

At Rose Park Psychology, we work with children, teenagers, and adults to help reduce phobic fear and avoidance using evidence-based therapy that builds confidence and restores daily functioning.

What Are Specific Phobias?

A specific phobia involves an overwhelming fear that is out of proportion to the actual danger posed. Some common examples include:

  • Animals – e.g. dogs, spiders, birds
  • Natural environments – e.g. storms, heights, water
  • Situational fears – e.g. flying, driving, tunnels, elevators
  • Medical fears – e.g. needles, blood, vomiting, dental visits
  • Other phobias – e.g. choking, loud sounds, clowns, balloons

When faced with the phobic trigger — or even the thought of it — people may experience intense physical symptoms such as a racing heart, shortness of breath, dizziness, nausea, or sweating. This can lead to avoidance behaviours, anticipatory anxiety, and a reduced sense of control over daily life. It can also co-occur with other mood conditions such as depression, as well as other anxiety disorders such as health anxiety, panic disorder, and social anxiety.

How Our Psychologists Can Help

Therapy is paced to suit your needs, and may include:

  • Cognitive Behavioural Therapy (CBT) – to explore the relationship between thoughts, feelings, and behaviours, and gently challenge fear-based thinking patterns
  • Exposure Therapy – a structured, step-by-step approach to gradually facing your fears in a safe and supported way
  • Psychoeducation – to increase understanding of how phobias develop and reduce any feelings of shame or confusion
  • Mindfulness and grounding techniques – to help manage physical symptoms of anxiety and stay present during challenging moments

We work collaboratively to ensure therapy aligns with your age, comfort level, and personal goals, helping you feel empowered every step of the way.

Resources and Support

For further reading and support outside of therapy, the following trusted organisations provide accessible information on phobias, anxiety, and evidence-based treatment options:

  • Beyond Blue – Offers clear explanations of specific phobias and social anxiety, including symptoms, lived experiences, and effective treatment options.
  • ReachOut Australia – Shares youth-friendly information for young people, parents, and educators, including lived experience stories and peer-to-peer support.

These resources can help build awareness, reduce stigma, and complement the support you receive through therapy at Rose Park Psychology.
