Rose Park Psychology: WorkCover Claims and Work-Related Stress

WorkCover Claims and a Psychologist

Workers may be referred by a doctor, to a psychologist for treatment and support to recover from their work related stress injury and return to work and life as soon as possible.

If you are considering a WorkCover claim or have lodged a claim, we can give guidance for every step of the way. We provide both early intervention to workers who are stressed and are struggling to go to work. We can provide stress management, trauma counselling, treatment for psychological disorders and can guide rehabilitation for workers who have left the workplace. A psychologist can commence therapy once we have received your WorkCover medical certificate signed by your GP. Our aim is to involve you in therapy and problem solving as soon as possible as this provides you with the best outcomes.

WorkCover claims are a difficult road for all involved. Our WorkCover psychologist, Kylie Darley has great familiarity with the management of WorkCover claims. She can communicate with doctors, employers and claims managers. She can guide all parties in the process.  Here is information about how to lodge a WorkCover claim.

Key Information for Claimants
  • Referral Needed: A GP must provide a medical certificate for WorkCover to initiate treatment.
  • Treatment Approach: Psychologists use a biopsychosocial approach, focusing on recovery, function, and return to work.
  • Conditions Treated: We provide treatment for PTSD, anxiety, and depression arising from workplace issues.

WorkCover Claims arising from Critical Incidents

If you are assaulted at work, involved in a critical incident, or are repeatedly exposed to very emotionally demanding situations,  it is important to seek psychologist care quickly as early intervention predicts better recovery.

Entrapment in the Work Place

A basic definition of stress is when a demand is placed on a worker that that worker cannot meet or avoid Some workers report that in their workplace, conditions exist where they experience entrapment. There is a problem they can’t solve, the workload of the job is undoable – there may be bullying in the work place. There are stressful emotional situations that occur repeatedly. There is a limit to how long a person can endure a problem that they can’t solve. Entrapment is a common cause of WorkCover stress claims

General Stress Management – Assessment and Intervention

An individual can do a lot to improve the ways in which he or she can manage stress.

  • If there is a problem, you can problem solving strategies.
  • A worrier you can learn to stop worrying, by learning anxiety management skills
  • If your self care is low, you can improve your self care strategies.
  • When your job skills are in deficit, you engage in training.
  • If you do not have supportive relationships, there are communication strategies that you can employ to help improve the amount of support that you can obtain from others.
  • When your job is not right for you, you can assess this and plan for change.

Finding support from a psychologist is a good first step. You will get a chance to discuss what is happening with your emotions. Many people are shocked at the severity of symptoms that can be experienced. Your psychologist will help with an accurate assessment of your symptoms, the job, your skills to handle that job and your own abilities to handle different situations. With a comprehensive assessment we will assess:

  • Your level of distress or burnout.
  • The problems presented by your job and your workplace.
  • Your ability to handle stress, stop worrying, etc.

You and your psychologist can work out a personalized stress management plan. Together you can work out how you and/or your life, or your relationships need to change.

In addition to stress management in Adelaide, we offer assessment and treatment for anxiety, depression, panic attacks, OCD, PTSD, social phobia, sleep issues, etc. Learn more about work related stress: here
