Telehealth Neuroaffirming Therapy

Telehealth Neuroaffirming Therapy

At our practice, we offer telehealth therapy grounded in neurodiversity-affirming principles. This means we don’t view autism or other forms of neurodivergence as problems to fix. Instead, we work alongside you and respect your lived experience, value your ways of being, and adapt our support to fit you.

What Does Neuroaffirming Mean?

The term neuroaffirming (or neurodiversity-affirming) describes an approach that respects and values neurological differences, such as autism, ADHD, learning disabilities, and more, as natural variations of the human mind, not deficits that need to be “fixed.”

Instead of trying to make people appear more “typical” or fit into narrow expectations, neuroaffirming therapy works to:

  • Respect how you naturally think, feel, communicate, and relate
  • Create a safe space for you to be your authentic self
  • Acknowledge and validate your lived experience
  • Support your own goals, not impose neurotypical ones
  • Understand and adapt to your sensory, communication, and processing needs

In other words, neuroaffirming care is about working with you, not changing who you are. It recognises that many of the struggles neurodivergent people face are the result of external barriers, such as misunderstanding, inflexible systems, or social stigma, and not something “wrong” inside the person.

What Does Neuroaffirming Telehealth Look Like?

Here’s how our online therapy sessions are designed to support Autistic and otherwise neurodivergent clients:

  • Ongoing learning and humility
We’re committed to continually learning about autism and neurodivergence. We seek out autistic-led resources, and our approach is always evolving.
  • A space where you can be your whole self
You don’t need to mask, explain, or perform. Whether you prefer to stim, wear headphones, keep your camera off, or bring your pet to sessions, your way of being is welcome. Sessions are paced to your comfort.
  • Flexible and clear communication
We’ll find a way of communicating that works for you, whether that’s verbal, written, visual, or a mix. We don’t assume one right way to communicate and we regularly check in to ensure our style is a good fit.
  • Respect for your experience
You are the expert in your life. We listen, believe you, and centre your experience.
  • Personalised, autistic-informed support
We don’t just adapt mainstream therapies. We start by understanding your needs, strengths, and goals, and co-create support that works for you.
  • Real affirmation of neurodivergence
We don’t just accept neurodivergence, but we respect and celebrate it. We recognise the impacts of ableism and work to offer care that is inclusive, respectful, and empowering.

Why Choose Telehealth?

For many neurodivergent people, online therapy is more accessible and less overwhelming than in-person sessions. It can offer:

  • Sensory comfort (your space, your lighting, your sound)
  • Flexible communication options
  • Reduced time, travel, and unpredictability
  • A setting that feels safe, familiar, and yours

We aim to make every telehealth session as neuroinclusive as possible, and we welcome your feedback on what works best for you.

What Can Neuroaffirming Therapy Support?

You don’t have to be in crisis or meet any criteria to access therapy. People come to us for support with all kinds of things, including:

  • Anxiety, overwhelm, or burnout
  • Executive functioning difficulties (planning, motivation, memory, decision-making, task initiation)
  • Exploring identity, including gender, sexuality, neurodivergence, and values
  • Social communication differences or challenges
  • Feeling “different,” isolated, or misunderstood
  • Grief, trauma, or difficult life transitions
  • Navigating relationships, boundaries, or sensory needs in partnerships
  • Late-identified autism or understanding your neurodivergence
  • Unpacking masking, shame, and self-worth
  • Goal-setting and life direction, even when things feel unclear

It doesn’t have to be “about Autism” to be neuroaffirming. You might be coming to therapy because of work stress, panic attacks, a recent diagnosis, or just feeling stuck, and that’s completely valid. Neuroaffirming therapy doesn’t mean you need to talk about autism or ADHD all the time. It means we work in a way that understands and respects how your brain works, even when we’re supporting you with things that affect everyone.

How Neuroaffirming Therapy Works With Other Approaches

Neuroaffirming practice isn’t a type of therapy on its own. It’s a framework that shapes how we deliver therapy, whatever the approach. Whether we’re drawing from CBT (Cognitive Behavioural Therapy), ACT (Acceptance and Commitment Therapy), DBT (Dialectical Behaviour Therapy), or other modalities, the difference lies in how we use them.

In neuroaffirming therapy:

  • We adapt the model to suit you, not the other way around.
For example, we might modify how we do cognitive work in CBT to allow for non-linear thinking, or adjust pacing and language in DBT.
  • We centre your lived experience as the foundation
You’re the expert in your life. If a strategy or exercise doesn’t land, we explore that together. We value feedback and co-create the process.
  • We remove ableist assumptions.
We focus on understanding behaviours in context.
  • We offer choice and collaboration, and you shape the process with us.
You can choose how we communicate, and how goals are set.
  • We use tools mindfully, when they support your goals and feel accessible.
We teach skills and explore concepts in sensory and communication aware ways.
